Containerized Loads CDL Guide
Containerized load questions test whether you understand how freight moves between trucks, rail, and ships, and what the driver must still verify before hauling it.
Rail or Ship
The key CDL answer is that the freight is carried part of the way by rail or ship.
Secured Cargo
Containers still need proper securement, whether they lock to a frame or ride on a flatbed.
Weight Limits
For sealed loads, the driver still checks gross weight and axle weight limits.
What to remember for the CDL exam
- Containerized loads are commonly used when freight travels part of the trip by rail or ship.
- Truck delivery often happens at the start or end of that trip.
- Some containers lock to a special frame, while others are carried on flatbed trailers.
- Sealed loads cannot be inspected inside, but drivers still check gross weight and axle weight limits.
Easy way to avoid the trap answer
Do not choose an answer that says containerized loads do not need inspection or securement. The driver may not be able to inspect the inside of a sealed container, but the vehicle still has to be legal, balanced, and secured before the trip starts.
